Review: | This unit has the same inside as the Radio Shack 15-1994, which has more buttons and backlight that lights up ALL buttons.
Given the similarity in the features (and more such as channel scan, etc) and prices, I would recommend trying both the 15-1994 and the Cinema 7 at the same time (return the one you don't like). I was also comparing the two with the popular RCA RCU810.
In my case, it was an easy decision to go with 15-1994. Its rich and powerful features, combined with the quality build, backlight, and intuitive button placement and labeling give the 15-1994 a big leap over the Cinema 7.
For instructions, tips and tricks, read the pages at www.hifi-remote.com. This website exposes the hidden features of the Cinema 7 and the 15-1994. |

Review: | The best value of any remote. If you're looking for a complete and inexpesive solution for your home theater, I can't think of a better way to go than the URC-7800. I bought this because my URC-8800 (which is more than twice as expensive) could not control all the features of my new DirecTivo receiver. The 7800 was able to control my TV, receiver, DVD player, VCR, and two DirecTV receivers without a hitch (except for my RCA DSS, which I had to teach it some commands). And don't pay any attention to the manual - you can learn a code on any button, not just the four L buttons. And you can also assign a macro to ANY button, not just the two macro button. I taught it all the transport functions (about 10 different functions) of my DirecTivo receiver with no problem.
I think it is ergonimically excellent, however there is no backlight. And even though there is limited memory, I have taught it about 20 different commands and programmed three lengthy macros and haven't maxed out yet.
Most importantly, however, is this remote's ability to use advanced codes. Basically, with advanced codes you are able to program buttons to do things that not even the factory remote for your device can do (such as discrete power/input selects). Using advanced codes, I was able to go directly into the service menu of my Toshiba TV. Even with my Toshiba remote I was not able to do this without also pressing buttons on the actual TV.
Overall I don't think you can go wrong with this remote. Sure, more expensive remotes will have more memory and will be backlit, but this one gives you the most bang for your buck, guaranteed. And the advanced code ability even lets it do many things that much more expensive remotes still will not do. Highly recommended. |
