Strengths:

Users upgradable functions also known as advance code for quite a lot of equipments. A big library of Device code and Advance code support. This forum support. Cross device key mover functions support. All keys Backlighted.

Weaknesses:

Very limited Learner memory. Unsupported expandable 6 pin port. DVD device, and Receiver or Amp device key on the six main device keys. Overly simplified Users Manual.

Review:

This remote does remove the clustered coffee table that ends up having five to nine remotes collected from all your Audio Video equipments. A central remote does not have to cost as much as a DVD player or a dishwashing machine. At $30, 15-1994 can reduce the whole majority of users coffee table clustering. For some people it can be a good second backup remote. For some people, it is a good advance code generator that are hard or impossible to generate any other means.

I bought this remote to complement my Sony RM-VL900. I like the design better of the RM-VL900 where I can assign the macros to the component select buttons. The VL900 doesn't have advanced codes, and I needed discrete power on codes, discrete input selects, and some other codes the VL900 should have had (like receiver sleep and video 3).

I don't know why Radio Shack didn't put specific DVD and RECVR buttons on the remote. Also, programmable remote without the option for using your receiver to control the volume on all components is silly.

While the advanced codes are awesome, it would have been nice if the manual covered any of this information. And it should have made clear that you need to change the AUX button to VCR and then assign the code for the DVD player.

Bought this remote when I got DishNetwork.
I wanted compatibility with the Dish as well as ability to control volume through my Technics receiver. To my disappointment, the "punch through" for volume control didn't operate as described. It only "punches through" to the TV (all volume controlled on TV set).
Certainly not suitable for home theatre.

Also, while there were some Laser Disc Player codes in the manual, there were no codes for any DVD players.

This remote is not for a home theatre user. Mine is going back to the store.

This remote is a good value at the list price of $40 -- when on sale for $30 it is an outstanding buy. It has lots of buttons so you can have all sorts of exotic features controlled by this unit -- if you can't find the advanced codes, you can learn them from your old remote. Plus you can learn to nearly ANY key (contrary to the waste-of-trees manual that comes with it).

I really enjoyed the backlighting, but it only worked for a couple of months for me. From posts in the forums here, this seems to be a not uncommon problem. Probably extends my battery life, though :-).

Review:

This is the remote of all remotes for the general user, and a great toy for the more advanced user. And great value to boot at only $30 when on sale.

Just like with the Cinema 7, you can program any missing button using advanced codes if you have a working device code, or with learning if you don't.

Great conservative design, no flashy colors or weird button layouts.

If I were to design an inproved version, the first thing would be TONS more memory. Then I would swap the positions of the number keys with the menu arrow keys. I would also add prev and next track buttons (in addition to the channel up and down buttons) as new devices such as ReplayTV and TiVo need both.

I would also make the remote upgradeable. This remote is physically upgradeable (that's what the 6-pin connector under the battery cover is for), but Radio Shack has chosen not to upgrade them.

Strengths:

Comfortable, backlighting, controls X10 without learning anything, 6 devices, some learning ability, controls all menu functions, PIP, etc.

Weaknesses:

I'd love a tiny LCD to show me which device is selected, and of course it only holds 20-30 learned buttons, so that could be greatly improved. Also - it is not upgradeable (and since it was made a few years ago, it doesn't know MANY new device codes!). Also - the finish, which is a plastic suede, is damaged easily.

Review:

I love the remote, nothing touches it for $30, I have passed on Marantz RC2000 among the rest of the remotes. I don't get people spending $200-500 on a remote control, that's INSANITY. That's more than a 5 Disc DVD player!

Anyway, back to the review, the remote has some weight but is very comfortable and the backlighting is awesome.

Anyone who has one loves it, save the limited learning ability. UPGRADE THIS, RADIO SHACK!
