Strengths:

Programable, learnt codes from all my remotes, backlighting.

Weaknesses:

Backlighting, a handfull.

Best remote I've ever had. Bought it from someone from this site (for a good price) actually.

I taught it everything from my other remotes (TV, DSS, CD/DVD, receiver) without a problem. The lighting is a great feature, especially for the lcd buttons, although I know where everything is now.

The negatives (and perceived negatives brought up by previous reviewers):
--backlighting: I love it, but it does eat batteries at about a set every three months, which I guess isn't that bad. I've bought rechargables that I will be using soon.
--button layout: The no-channel-up-down thing isn't that bad. I have mine set up on the lcd and on the DSS circle at the bottom. Easy enough for me.
--ease of use: It is a handfull of a remote, but it's definitely worth it to be rid of all the other remotes.
--losing memory when changing batteries: I'm not sure what other people have done, but my programming doesn't show up until I hit the small red Program (I think that's the name) button. This brings all my presets back on after a battery change.

This is one of the best purchases I have ever made and would easily do it again.

Strengths:

Nice remote in it's time. Great to look at, lots of tactile buttons, fairly well laid out.

Weaknesses:

Eats batteries if lighting is setup liberally. Lack of dedicated channel up and channel down buttons (Which was addressed on the MkII version) wasn't much fun untill you got used to using the small buttons next to the screen instead. Small "clips" that hold the battery cover broke off after a couple years of usage, but was pretty straightforward to repair.

Also, inability to learn some higher frequence IR (Mostly non-standard, thankfully) left me unable to program some of the GUI codes for my receiver into my Rc2000.

Review:

In it's day a wonderfull remote, although slightly dated now, but still far and above many of the current learning remotes. Contrary to what others seem to indicate here, I never had *ANY* problems with the memory filling up, probably due to carefull programming to avoid duplicate codes, etc.

Extremely durable, mine took countless dives off furniture and just kept on ticking. Survived two kids, as well!

Programming text onscreen took some practice, but once setup I never had any problems whatsoever for the 3 years I owned my Rc2000. Never had any problems with "Losing" codes on battery changes, either.

I purchased this thing for $250. It has been the biggest waist of hard earned money I have ever made. Since when I bought it there really wasn't anything out there that even "promised" to do what it should have been capable of, I lived with it. After learning the basic commands from about 1/4 of my collection of remotes, it would flash its notorious "FULL" indicator at me. I finally pared down the learned functions to the bare minimum, and like I said, lived with it. Somewhere, someplace, there should be a lawyer out there bored out of his mind, who would set up a class action law siute against marantz for producing this piece of trash. To add insult to injury, they produced the MKII version which supposedly corrected most of the short commings of the RC200 MKI. I'm sure they used the money they made on the MKI to fund the necessary R&D to bring the MKII to market! Thanks for letting me vent!!!!

Strengths:

Learns any IR code. User programmable buttons and labels (via LCD panel). Multiple IR's on one key(see below). Actual buttons used instead of LCD picture buttons

Weaknesses:

Short battery life. Small cursor keys. not enough memory to use EVERY spot

Once refered to as "Remote of the Gods" this is the finest designed remote (short of the RC2000 Mark II) I've ever used. Since I never look at my remote while operating it, the buttons are a GREAT improvement over those LCD touch-screens. Not that it doesn't have the features of one. The LCD labels for eight custom keys work great. Also, since I use a video switcher seperate from the audio switcher in my receiver, the ability of learning several codes on one key is great (while leaning a button, just beam two remotes or two different buttons from one remote into the IR eye on the RC2000). Everything I ever wanted to do with a remote (baring RF codes for satelite dishes) can be done on this. Ever since I've gotten it, not a single other remote has been on my coffee table. I've looked at what has come before it and after it and only the RC2000 Mark II has ever beaten it. Since the Mark II is basically the same remote with the addition of more memory, different key sizes and channel +/- keys I can safely say this is still the "Remote of the Gods."

Currently on #3 of this exact unit. BUT this remote will remain in a drawer. These monster kept chewing up batteries and not holding the programming featurese when quickly changing the batteries. Unit is for a medium size HT configuration. Apparently, unless you need or want to scroll over pages and pages of commands the unit does not work. Spoke with 3 other users, all dissappointed and 2 have been returned. This experience has me really leery about the Pronto, though it looks exactly like what I need (and thought I had with the RC!!)

After endless deliberation and a drawerful of "universal" remotes, I found this on close-out from a custom home theater installer. It has been a very pleasant surprise after reading many negative reviews. Setup of all my components including changing the labeling of the buttons took one afternoon for full functionality; really a breeze once you get used to it. The size/shape at first seemed awkward, but now I appreciate that it can be used as a tabletop remote or handheld with equal ease. Since I don't use the (gimmicky) lighting feature, I've never even had to replace batteries even though the remote is used regularly all day long, every day for 7 months now. The biggest complaint I have is that the buttons require a firm push and the cursor/guide/etc buttons for DSS are much too small.
